You have good points and I like the matrix. It shows the truth that schools still don't get it.

The bigger problem is beyond metal detectors and teachers. It is school districts hiring campus security AND training them to do their job. I built a ground up program as a Director for a school district. That was over 2 years ago and they still have the program in place. When you hire security, they need to do the security work.

-Eyes on campus

-Every time a student turns a corner, there is security there

-Constant roaming patrols around perimeter of campus, randomly searching bushes etc.

-Hiring a proportionate number of security (For every 100 student = 1 security)

-Pay/benefits for those security

-Administrators also trained in best security practices

-Districts hiring a Director of Emergency Preparedness and School Safety that has a background in this work

-Administrators need to better understand this is now the normal and we need to better prepared.

Every school budget will be reduced in the next budget cycle. There will be less money for everything, including security. The best solution is teaching de-escalation and conflict resolution skills.

Please, let’s send this substack to every school superintendent and state member of congress.

Excellent analysis as usual. It would be so much easier for gun owners to keep their guns secured since 3 out of 4 school shooters “borrow” the guns from home. Also if parents didn’t buy their kids their own AR15 for Christmas or a Birthday! Once an armed person reaches a school there is so little opportunity to stop the havoc.
